In a statement released on Monday, the G7 leaders condemned « in the strongest possible terms the new nuclear test conducted by North Korea » during the weekend.
Today, South Korea continues the cycle of military activities in response to the ongoing Pyongyang provocations. According to Seoul’s Navy, some of the assets mobilized in the waters of the Japanese Sea include the 2,500-ton Gangwon frigate, and three patrol boats.
Seoul said the North appeared to be preparing the launch of more missiles after Sunday’s test shook up the region. South Korea conducted a series of live-fire drills, therefore the US warned it would bolster its military presence.
South Korea is talking to Washington about deploying aircraft carriers and strategic bombers to the Korean peninsula, and has been ramping up its own defenses in the meantime.
Washington tried to ease South Korean doubts about America’s commitment to South Korean security, after Donald Trump openly stated its East Asian ally was “appeasing” Pyongyang. The United States agreed to remove warhead restrictions on South Korean missiles, allowing Seoul to develop more powerful weapons that would boost its pre-emptive strike capabilities against the North.
