On Sunday 14 October, EU and UK negotiating teams have met to discuss and resolve key issues before the European Summit that will take place on Wednesday 17 October. Despite this surprise meeting that took place in Brussels at the last minute, negotiations have not progressed towards a deal. One of the key issues that remain unresolved concerns a potential hard border between Northern Ireland and the Republic of Ireland. The question of the Irish border after the Brexit has become a cornerstone of the negotiations, since the Brexit would necessarily imply a control of merchandises at the customs. Michel Barnier, chief negotiator for the EU, insists on having a backstop with Northern Ireland staying in the single market in order to avoid that the United Kingdom has access to the market without having the related obligations. Consequently, a discussion has taken place about the possibility to extend the post-Brexit transitory period until December 2020.
