#FactOfTheDay 24/01/2019 – Venezuela: Juan Guaidó declares himself President of the country with the support of the United States
The Speaker of the National Assembly and leading opposition figure Juan Guaidó introduced himself on Thursday, January 23, 2019 as the new President of Venezuela. Guaidó is acting as interim president to ensure the transition until free elections are held. The current President Nicolas Maduro denounces a coup d’état fomented by the opposition and the US government.
The United States and many Latin American countries were quick to officially express their support for the new interim president, whom they recognize as legitimate. This is a relief for many of Maduro’s opponents, many of whom were marching through the streets of Caracas.
The climate is therefore likely to be particularly tense in the coming weeks in Venezuela, which is already plunged into a deep economic, political and social crisis. The army’s response is decisive since it is the only one that will ultimately decide on a possible transition.
